This project is a key component of the ‘Winning Winsford’ regeneration programme, spearheaded by a pro-active council aiming to capitalise on waterfront redevelopment opportunities.
Located on a town centre brownfield site, it will be one of the first realised buildings in a masterplan that seeks to open up connections from the town to the River Weaver. The new-build ‘one stop shop’ facility replaces a scattered leisure estate, providing an enhanced experience for users and both energy and spatial efficiency for the operator. The brief has developed with input from various council departments, including sports, civic and cultural. The building is divided into wet and dry zones accessed off a central changing village, with a front-of-house atrium providing visual connection across the site. Facilities include a highly flexible 500 capacity sports and events hall, 25 m swimming pool, teaching pool, 1th suite, squash courts, dance studio, fitness suite, cyber cafe, bar and conference suite. As a ‘gateway’ project, the building actively engages with The Drumber – the main street leading to Winsford’s retail core. It has an active frontage, with ribbon glazing to the wet side, a projecting window to the fitness suite and applied graphics for branding and wayfinding.
