Poole Harbourside Gateway

40.250 sqm

UK

2005

Poole has one of the world’s largest natural harbours and is an increasingly popular UK leisure destination. It is currently the focus of several urban initiatives to reintegrate the town centre with the waterfront. In line with its company policy on the reuse of in-town brownfield sites, ASDA has been a key partner in the Poole regeneration process. ASDA is committed to developing mixed use schemes, as recommended by government. In addition to an anchor superstore, the Poole project incorporates three residential blocks, a waterfront hotel (with harbour views), offices, restaurants, carparking and smaller retail units.

The masterplan for the prominent corner site is sensitive to the scale and character of the local urban context. It sets out a mix of low and high rise buildings within attractive new public space, crossed by pedestrian routes from the street to the harbour. It strategically places a residential tower on a pivotal point in the streetscape to act as a marker along the length of the waterfront. Phase 1 of the project is now fully operational. It incorporates an 8,780m2 ASDA superstore (with restaurant and pharmacy), private housing and a total of 32 affordable key-worker flats. Outline planning consent has now been granted for a further 11.000m2 of prime urban development.
