The unique setting of the historic White and Red Chambers In Ostozhenka street provided us with a remarkable opportunity to savour the historic importance of the site by creating an architectural design which will enforce and highlight the beauty of these old buildings. From day one we have always agreed together with our Client that our mission is the keep and restore the original facades of White and Red Chambers, while contributing to it with a state-of-the-art high-tech extension, which will create a brand new shopping, leisure, and entertainment environment for the local people in a tasteful and elegant way.

The original structure of the White Chambers is to be reinforced, and the external façade to be restored, while the internal walls, facing the courtyard would become part of the new atrium with a spectacular glass roof structure. This atrium which creates the link between the retail levels would provide a similar functional and aesthetic layout as the historic market of Covent Garden in London. The bordering walls of the atrium, including the White Chambers would feature an internal colonnade, carefully detailed balustrades, quality shop fronts, and luxurious open spaces.

While we have put an extra emphasis on the development of the interior layout, we also desire to improve the surrounding area around the Red Chambers. The existing small park would benefit from a full landscaping design improvement, while celebrating the existing statue of Friedrich Engels. The current small link between the Red and White Chambers would be removed and pedestrian access would create a connection between Prechistenka and Ostozhenka street while providing access to the newly designed atrium.

The development of Ostozhenka 6 building followed the same principles as the White Chambers. We decided to keep the original façade while the new top floors would feature contemporary design with classical proportions and traditional elements. This way we can guarantee that the ever so important street view of Ostozhenka street would not be disturbed by an alien expression of modern architectural design. Our proposal for the facades was prepared after carefully studying the surrounding local buildings, and relevant other examples which were architecturally significant.

In terms of overall project development we believe we managed to find a careful balance between new and historic design, by creating an exciting place for the visitors to enjoy, which will definitely raise the level of quality of this historic area of Ostozhenka neighbourhood.
