This was one of Dyer’s first collaborations with a client body comprising a local authority, leisure operator and contractor. For Lewisham, it marked a major milestone in the provision of integrated council services. Its core aim is to promote lifelong learning and wellbeing in state-of-the-art facilities with full public access. The brief was to design a new ‘one stop shop’ facility, amalgamating a wide range of civic services. The principal challenge was to accommodate all the various functions within a coherent, legible building, especially since some – like the 25m swimming pool – called for a specialist services approach.
Dyer has creatively designed a landmark building which the community can be proud of. The building has a long and low profile, so maintains a discreet presence in the public park, over which it has extensive views. Internally, emphasis is on excellent connectivity. There is a fluidity between the individual spaces and the areas in-between, with colour used extensively for wayfinding. This centre is a brand new, mixed-use concept that integrates a primary healthcare centre, a community centre, a library with leisure facility for the local community. The health centre comprises 2 G.P practice with a number of individual treatment rooms and consultation rooms, a dentist practice, with associated treatment rooms and X-RAY facility, a chiropody practice, including leg ulcer treatment rooms and general treatment facilities.
