Central Manchester

Central Manchester Hospitals project is one of the largest healthcare developments in Europe. It brings together a total of five hospitals on the site of the existing Royal Infirmary, series of disparate hospitals that had suffered from many years of ill-conceived piecemeal developments, creating a single state-of-the-art campus in Manchester’s university quarter. Central Manchester Hospitals and Research Centre was constructed on a busy live urban campus. It  co-locates four new hospitals, adult, eye, women’s and children’s, into a single development.

Each of the hospitals has a dedicated entrance, light airy reception and outpatient facilities. Two mental health facilities are also located on the site together with eight ancillary support buildings, a 1.500 space multi-storey car park, energy centre and the retention of a Grade II listed Victorian façade. Manchester strong tradition of medical advancements is ensured by the provision of a ‘state of the art’ research centre located on the upper floors of the main hospital’s building to promote bench-to-bedside research. Dyer’s masterplan created a healthcare campus holistically integrating the development into the existing urban morphology of Manchester. The buildings are disposed around a large green open space providing a valuable amenity for all using the hospital and the associated buildings.
