Bexley Wing

The Bexley Wing is a new-build addition to the St James’s University Hospital campus in Leeds. The hospital has a world renowned reputation as a centre for medical research and education and the Bexley Wing is the largest cancer treatment facility in Europe with 12 linear accelerator bunkers.

The project supports a wide range of specialist healthcare provision, including outpatient and daycase suites, haematology units, nuclear medicine and rehabilitation centres, theatres, intensive care and high-dependency units, 12 linear accelerators for radiotherapy treatment, CT and MRI suites and a bespoke facility for a state-of-the-art PET scanner. Unusual for a project of such complexity, the Bexley Wing integrates diagnostic and treatment areas with research, teaching and patient facilities.

The co-location of the various functions into a single landmark 12 storey building creates a more user-friendly patient experience. It brings legibility and focus to the hospital campus and maximises clinical and service efficiencies. The specialist accommodation is grouped in a high-tech spine to the north of the plan. It is linked to three wings of patient rooms by a glazed public gallery running the length of the building. The project opened on 18 July 2008.
